FAQ's

What exactly is the examiner looking for on a Driving Test?

Quite simply, a safe drive. This means being fully aware of what's happening around you, and showing that you can sensibly respond to situations with courtesy and consideration.

How can I stay calm after I've made a mistake on my Driving Test?

You don't have to be perfect to pass. If you make a mistake, keep it behind you and concentrate on what's happening ahead.

How many mistakes are allowed on a Driving Test?

Try to make as few mistakes as possible. While a single mistake that is serious or dangerous can result in a fail, errors considered not to have involved potential danger are recorded as ’driving faults'. It takes 15 of these accumulated throughout the test to take your pass away from you.

Will I fail my Driving Test if I do my three-point turn in more than three turns?

Not necessarily. The number of turns depends on the length of your car and the width of the road.

Before passing parked cars on my Driving Test, must I always signal?

No, it's not always necessary to signal. If you use your mirrors early enough you probably won't need to signal on most occasions.

Will I fail my Driving Test if I hesitate too much?

You need to show confidence, together with making sound judgments. Overcautious driving where you wait too long when it's safe to go is likely to inconvenience and irritate any following traffic.

Will I have to reverse my car into a parking bay on my Driving Test?

If there's a car park at your Driving Test Centre, there's a firm possibility that the examiner will ask you to do this exercise either at the beginning or the end of the test.

What happens if I fail?

If sadly, you fail, you'll be given a printed explanation of all aspects of driving shown on the Driving Test report. The examiner will also spend a few moments explaining why you failed.
